5 Travel Perks of the AMEX Platinum

Here is my card, love the weight and feeling of the metal!

The American Express Platinum Card is one of my all-time favorite cards, renowned for its plethora of travel benefits for cardholders. I’ve been a proud owner of this card for the past three years and intend to continue as such. It truly makes traveling a breeze, from the airport to the hotel! I believe the AMEX Plat is a must-have in your credit card rotation if you travel at least two to three times a year. Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards points if approved after spending $8000 within the first 6 months. At a steep price of $695 annually, here are the five travel perks that justify the cost of the AMEX Platinum each year.

1. $200 Hotel Credit

With the AMEX Platinum, you will receive a $200 Hotel Credit annually to use at the any of the hotels and resorts featured in the Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) or the Hotel Collection. All my hotel stays within the AMEX portfolio have been phenomenal. One of the best cities to redeem the $200 Hotel Credit is Las Vegas, where hotels can often be booked for under $100 per night, essentially making it a free stay! To redeem this credit, you must book your hotel stay in the AMEX travel portal using your Platinum card. Please note that bookings for the Hotel Collection require a two-night minimum stay. Both the FHR and the Hotel Collection offer room upgrades if available upon check-in and a $100 experience credit, which can be used for dining, spa services, room service, and Wi-Fi. In my recent stays, both FHR and The Hotel Collection offered free breakfast for two as a perk of being an AMEX Platinum holder. They also accommodated late checkout, allowing for more relaxation time before our departure. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Thompson Savannah by Hyatt during a road trip earlier this year. With our $200 hotel credit, our total cost for the stay was only $17.13! What an amazing deal for a luxury hotel, free breakfast, and included amenities. The Thompson Savannah also honored the late checkout guarantee of 4 pm.

2. $85 TSA PreCheck or $100 Global Entry

One of the most stressful parts of traveling is going through airport security lines. With the AMEX Plat, you get to choose between enrolling in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry for free. TSA PreCheck costs $85 for 5 years, while Global Entry costs $100 for 5 years. Note that starting on October 1, 2024, the Global Entry price will increase to $120. Had I done more research, I would’ve opted for Global Entry, as it includes everything TSA PreCheck offers but works internationally for faster customs clearance. Global Entry does have additional requirements, including a passport and an interview. For TSA Precheck, you apply online, provide valid ID, and await approval. The perks of having TSA PreCheck or Global Entry include bypassing long security lines, keeping your shoes on, leaving electronics and liquids in your bag. When approved, you’re assigned a Known Traveler Number (KTN) to add when booking flights for TSA Precheck to reflect on your boarding pass. TSA PreCheck wait times may vary depending on airport traffic. At my local airport, Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is always busy due to its proximity to Disney, I save at least 30-60 minutes by having TSA Precheck. TSA Precheck is a no-brainer travel perk in my opinion!

3. $189 CLEAR Credit

The American Express Platinum also provides a $189 CLEAR Plus Credit. CLEAR, combined with TSA Precheck, is a game-changer for airport security. CLEAR bypasses the need to have your ID scanned by TSA and allows you to skip the line and go right through to security. With CLEAR, you enroll online and pay for your membership using your AMEX Platinum. You must apply in person at a CLEAR pod at your local airport, where your retinas, fingerprints, ID, and profile picture are scanned. When I used CLEAR with Precheck, I breezed through security in less than 10 minutes!

4. $200 Airline Incidental Fee

Another travel perk of the AMEX Plat is the $200 Airline Incidental Fee. To receive this credit, you must enroll through your AMEX Plat benefits portal and pick the airline of your choice. You are restricted to only one airline to use the credit on for the whole year. The $200 Airline Incidental Fee applies to most in-flight purchases and, importantly, baggage fees. Most airlines charge for checked baggage, with an average price of the first checked bag at $30-35. Baggage costs add up depending on your party size or itinerary length. The credit can also be used for in-flight purchases such as food or Wi-Fi, as well as seat selection, pet fees, and lounge access.

5. Airport Lounge Access

Lastly, the airport lounge access is my favorite travel perk of the AMEX Plat and a major reason I was drawn to it. AMEX Plat cardholders have access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection and Priority Pass lounges. A Priority Pass membership without an AMEX Platinum retails at $99 per year, with a $35 charge per visit and per additional guest. The AMEX Plat includes the Priority Pass Select membership, allowing you to bring two guests free of charge. You must enroll in the Priority Pass membership on your AMEX Plat portal, and your card will be mailed to the address on file. Most lounges offer free food, drinks, shower suites, coffee, comfortable seating, and high-speed Wi-Fi. My favorite lounge from the collection is the Centurion Lounge! Centurion Lounges are featured at most major airports. I had the chance to visit the Centurion Lounge at JFK Airport and was impressed by the discreet speakeasy and massage services provided. Unfortunately, guests can no longer enter for free with the AMEX Plat member. Each guest is $50, and children aged 2-17 are $30, with the number of guests allowed subject to availability. Only departing flights are allowed to enter Centurion Lounges within 2-3 hours of the flight’s boarding time. Some Centurion Lounges have long wait times depending on volume, so it’s recommended to book a reservation in advance through the AMEX app. Access to an airport lounge alleviates the stress of traveling, allowing you to relax, eat, or enjoy the amenities before your flight.

Apply for the AMEX Platinum and get a referral offer of 80,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8000 within the first 6 months of owning the card.

Overall, the AMEX Platinum is completely worth it once you break down each travel perk’s cost.

$200 Hotel Credit + $85 TSA Precheck + $189 CLEAR Credit + $200 Airline Incidental Fee + $99 waived Priority Pass membership = $773 worth of credits, exceeding the $695 annual fee. As long as you utilize all the travel perks of your AMEX Platinum, the benefits outweigh the membership’s annual cost!

This card will continue to be in my top 5 credit card list as long as I continue to travel βœˆπŸ’ΌπŸ¨. The savings, stress alleviation, and luxury it provides during any trip are invaluable! #PlatinumGang #TravelHacks #AMEX4Lyfe
