Have a baby shower

Preparing for a baby as a to-be mommy can be stressful and challenging, especially when it comes down to finances. The best way to save money during pregnancy is to have a baby shower with your closest family and friends. You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars from the generosity of those around you.

The average price for baby essentials:

Stroller: $100-$1000

Car Seat: $100-$300

Crib: $100-$300

Diaper changing station: $100-$200

Diapers/baby wipes: $20-30 per box

Bottle sterilizer: $70

Clothes: $50-60 per month

Activity chairs/bouncers: $100-200

We were fortunate enough to be given all of the items above from loved ones, saving us about $3000!!!! Our family and friends were able to easily gift us these items through our baby registry, which brings me to my next point.

Create a baby registry Checklist

You can create a baby registry through Amazon, Target, Walmart, Babylist, and many others. I personally chose Amazon due to its convenience with the return policy and how easy it was to add items to the registry. Amazon allows you to return most items on your registry for store credit and does not notify the gift giver if you did indeed return the item! A win-win!

Amazon Baby Registry Perks

15% completion discount, this discount is available 60 days before the arrival date entered on the registry and expires 90 days after the arrival date, which equals to 6 months to use the discount!!!! It is valid for purchases of a combined value of $2000, for a max discount of $300! This was especially wonderful for when I had to order my post partum essentials, which were my ice pads, diapers, post partum underwear, nursing bra, and breastmilk storage bags.

Welcome Boxa free box of surprises that you can receive after completing 60% of your registry and purchased at least $10 worth of items from your registry. To do this, go to your Baby Registry home page, then click benefits, and then click on the Welcome Box Learn More button to add your Welcome Box to the cart. At checkout, the $35.00 promotional credit will be applied automatically so the box is free!

The Return Policy, which states eligible gifts can be returned up to 365 days and items purchased by the registry owner have a return window of 90 days. So you can trial and test items for an extended period of time before you decide to keep or return them.

Purchase Secondhand

Babies grow so fast and before you know it, your little one is already walking and talking! My baby girl is already 2 months old and doesn’t fit her newborn clothes anymore! Buying secondhand is a great way to save money instead of paying full retail price. The one item you should NEVER purchase used would be a car seat. Car seats have an average life span of 5-10 years and there is no way to fully know if they have been damaged or been in an accident before.

For in-store used baby clothes and furniture, Once Upon a Child, Goodwill, Salvation Army, and any other thrift stores are great to shop at in person.

If you prefer to shop online, you can buy secondhand websites such as OfferUp, Mercari, eBay, thredUP, and Poshmark.

Another great resource are your local neighborhood and mom Facebook groups. Many times I find myself scrolling on my feed and see lots of moms post their gently or barely used baby items and clothing for super cheap or free!

Qualify for free breast pump through Insurance

Did you know most insurance plans cover breast pumps? Depending on your health insurance you may be able to qualify for a free breast pump. I personally used Aeroflow Breastpumps to qualify for my free breast pump. After filling out your insurance information, they will email you a link to your product page of the pumps you qualify for free for or that you must pay a portion for. I chose the Motif Medical Luna with Battery which was a $0 copay! Aeroflow also gave me a free back support brace and postpartum support garment which I relied on during my recovery.
